Hiding from Japanese Ghosts
Ghost Spot Curses
In Aichi, Japan, there have been numerous reports of people suffering the symptoms of 'ghost spot curses'. While certain types of ghosts are rumoured to curse an unknowing victim with pain, fear, and death, it is also said that visiting ghost spots can afflict serious health issues, material problems, and targets may find themselves with an unwanted house-mate.
These may include:
Cemeteries
- feeling emotionally heavy with negative thoughts of depression, sadness, and anxiety

- back and wrist pain said to occur from ghosts ' grabbing' victims

In the past, mysterious cuts, bruises, and pains were attributed to ghost curses or vengeful forces. Recently, doctors contend medical issues may be the explanation.

Shrines and Temples
- schizophrenia-like symptoms such as hearing whispers, seeing something black linger in the corner of vision, unable to concentrate or separate reality from fantasy

- losing money or prestige, poor financial choices as an effect of a deity's smite

Haunted Houses
- constantly feeling watched despite leaving the haunted vicinity

- hyper-awareness of electronics including apprehensiveness to use technology (particularly gadgets with screens), monotonous buzzing sounds, feeling overwhelmed when touching something electronic (scattered thoughts, dread, sickness to stomach)

- antisocial behaviour such as withdrawing from conversation, ignoring social opportunities, irrational thoughts of 'them versus you'

Nature Ghost Spots
- sickness, chronic illness

- broken materials including shattered windscreens, flat tires, smashed phones / speakers
- sudden body malfunctions such as bloody nose, losing control of bladder, irregular menstruation, miscarriage
- unexplainable tangible incidences similar to an unfamiliar face or object reappearing in different contexts (like an unconventional phone strap found on a bus seat, public bathroom, and park seat as if 'following' the finder), foreign masses falling on cars or people (see 'Tojinbo'), or freshly-served food being infested by insects
Haunted Tunnels
- all of the above
- severe nightmares of being unable to escape, feeling preyed upon or grabbed/attacked from behind (particularly squeezing/stabbing sensations on the upper neck, shoulders, or under the ribs)
General Ghost Spots
- finding items at home moved, replaced, or missing
- doors, manholes, and windows opening despite having been locked shut
- unknown scratches, hand-prints, hair
- feeling like back of neck is being touched while lying in bed or alone in room
- human-like 'dark' shadows in unlit rooms
It is argued the majority of the listed issues are psychological (such as the 'Baader-Meinhof phenomenon' or stress-induced hysteria). However, others have also said blessing or exorcising the body and issue-afflicted environments (cars, homes, offices) brings a halt to all elements of 'ghost spot curses'.
These actions have been said to halt or prevent curses:
- placing salt in a saucer outside doorways
- waving incense-smoke at shrines over body (particularly the head)
- monk incantations and prayers
- protective paper seals
- doing a good deed for every symptom experienced
- cleansing body with bland / tasteless food (unseasoned boiled radish and white rice soup)
